Simon the Just

(fl. ?4th-2nd cent BCE)
High priest. According to Josephus, he is identifiable with Simeon I, the son of Onias I (4th- 3rd cent. BCE). However, the Talmud identifies him as the father of Onias, who built a temple at Leontopolis in Egypt; according to this account he was Simeon II, the father of Onias III (c. 200 BCE). In rabbinic literature he is described as one of the last members of the Great Assembly.
